Speaks - The Enemies of Property :

There is only one thing new that can be done under the sun; and that is to look at the sun. If you attempt it on a blue day in June, you will know why men do not look straight at their ideals. There is only one really startling thing to be done with the ideal, and that is to do it. It is to face the flaming logical fact, and its frightful consequences. Christ knew that it would be a more stunning thunderbolt to fulfil the law than to destroy it. It is true of both the cases I have quoted, and of every case. The pagans had always adored purity: Athena, Artemis, Vesta. It was when the virgin martyrs began defiantly to practice purity that they rent them with wild beasts, and rolled them on red-hot coals. The world had always loved the notion of the poor man uppermost; it can be proved by every legend from Cinderella to Whittington, by every poem from the Magnificat to the Marseillaise. The kings went mad against France not because she idealized this ideal, but because she realized it*. Joseph of Austria and Catherine of Russia quite agreed that the people should rule; what horrified them was that the people did. The French Revolution, therefore, is the type of all true revolutions, because its ideal is as old as the Old Adam, but its fulfilment almost as fresh, as miraculous, and as new as the New Jerusalem.

*Though, let it be added, the people ceased to rule as the King and the Church ceased to be free. Their supreme days were july 14th to 17th in 1789. Their decline began august 4th, same year.

Hilaire Belloc

Can It Be Mended? Part One :

It has been suggested that the auditing of the secret Party Funds might undermine the Party System. To inaugurate such a practice would certainly deal the Party System a heavy blow, but the success would not be final. Side by side with the officially audited Party Fund another secret fund would at once spring up. A drastic penalty might indeed be attached to any such form of secret bribery.

But the law would tend to be a dead letter in the absence of an alert public opinion behind it; for secret bribery, when it has become a national custom, is not so easy to eliminate. Nothing is less easy to prove, since all parties to the crime are concerned in defending it and in hiding it, and no one person can feel himself aggrieved. ...

Sometimes even a person who can feel himself aggrieved is not enough to eliminate national or multinational bad customs, though.

J. evolutionists:

A Philosophical Premise of 'Naturalism'?:

Naturalism is the philosophy that states that explanations for all phenomena must be in terms of natural causes.

Note: all phenomena, just not some, natural for all, never supernatural. A great negative claim.

Those basic assumptions--a memorable past, a predictable future, and an observable external reality--are the only assumptions made by science (and even the assumption of external reality is rejected by some philosophical idealists). Science makes no other assumptions.

A predictable future? To most of us predictions about tomorrow are qualified by "God willing and weather permitting, i e an admission the future is not really predictable. Surprises do happen.

When it comes to ID and "scientific" explanations of origins, he is very two standards:

The status of Intelligent Design as science has nothing whatsoever to do with its being natural or supernatural. As we have seen, simply being supernatural doesn't disqualify something from scientific study. Intelligent Design is rejected from science simply because there is no verifiable evidence to support it. Most of Intelligent Design theory is purely subjective, saying little more than "it sure looks designed to me."

The origin of the moon, for example, can be studied scientifically because different mechanisms for its origin imply different modern-day properties such as the chemical composition of moon rocks.)

Why not exchange the wording and judgements:

The intelligent design of this, that and third phenomenon can be studied scientifically, because the lack of such implies a chaos which we repeatedly do not observe. The flood and confusion of tongues can be studied scientifically because it implies on the one hand a memory of either event or both and on the other hand a confusion in the details. Which is exactly what we do observe, thank you Mark Isaak! The moon "sure looks as if" its rocks were solidified lava (or whatever be the theory). Which is not a scientific argument.

" There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." - The Origin of Species, Charles Darwin

In a century as dedicated to grandeur as the XIXth, the C of Wagner and the late Beethoven, that must have been final, must it not?

Proofs of a Conspiracy, by John Robinson: ("Ch II. The knowledge of human character is therefore of all others the most important. This is acquired only by observation, assisted by the instructions of his teacher. Characters in history are proposed to him for observation, and his opinion is required. After this he is directed to look around him, and to notice the conduct of other men; and part of his weekly rescripts must consist of accounts of all interesting occurrences in his neighbourhood, whether of a public or private nature. Cossandey, one of the four Professors, gives a particular account of the instructions relating to this kind of science. "The Novice must be attentive to trifles: For, in frivolous occurrences a man is indolent, and makes no effort to act a part, so that his real character is then acting alone. Nothing will have such influence with the Superiors in promoting the advancement of a candidate as very copious narrations of this kind, because the candidate, if promoted, is to be employed in an active station, and it is from this kind of information only that the Superiors can judge of his fitness. These characteristic anecdotes are not for the instruction of the Superiors, who are men of long experience, and familiar with such occupation. But they inform the Order concerning the talents and proficiency of the young member. Scientific instruction, being connected by system, is soon communicated, and may in general be very completely obtained from the books which are recommended to the Novice, and acquired in the public seminaries of instruction. But knowledge of character is more multifarious and more delicate. For this there is no college, and it must therefore require longer time for its attainment. Besides, this assiduous and long continued study of men, enables the possessor of such knowledge to act with men, and by his knowledge of their character, to influence their conduct. For such reasons this study is continued, and these rescripts are required, during the whole progress through the Order, and attention to them is recommended as the only mean of advancement. Remarks on Physiognomy in these narrations are accounted of considerable value." So far Mr. Cossandey

Am I, are homeless in general, one of the goals of this kind of observation?

First millennium:

Testament de St Rémy

Middle Ages

mediaeval online resources:

Boethius: Consolation of Philosophy, Latin and English, See also Catholic Encyclopedia: Boethius

Prudentius: Psychomachia,

Internet Medieval Source Book

Constantines laws for Christians...

Nennius: Historia Brittonum, 8th century, full text

Asser: Life of Alfred

Bede (673-735) He wrote The Life and Miracles of St Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne. As the train moved away it passed within the sight of the Grotto. The little boy sat up. "I want to go and talk to the little girl" - in the same train there was a girl who had been healed. And he got up and played with the little girl; and then he came back, and he said "I'm hungry now". And they gave him cake and two bowls of chocolate and enormous potted meat sandwiches, and he ate them! (This was in 1927). So Our Lord told them to give the little daughter of Jairus something to eat. So plain and matter of fact: for so miracles are.

from his letter 89
Letters, pp 99 - 100
